An Unexpected Day...

It was a regular Thursday, I got up went to work was going about my normal routine (which included wondering how and when she would come) as usual I had an ultrasound at 3:15 so Kristie came to take over my class for me and I went on my way. While driving there I usually call mom to let her know that I am on my way and will call her when it's done to let her know the news, especially at this point because we were so close to my due date ( March 22nd). In this particular conversation I said " well maybe we will get lucky and the baby is at a size where they just have me induced, that way you can get on a plane in time and it won't be the middle of the night." I knew that this was wishful thinking but I was just ready to have her out. So I hung up with mom went into the office and had my ultrasound. For those of you who don't know I had gestational diabetes and I had to go in twice a week for ultrasounds and NSTs to check her measurements, heartbeat, cord etc...
Well, during this scan her weight was actually a lot better, before she was in the 91st percentile and at this one she was in the 73rd. So you can imagine that right away I knew that I would not be induced for size, but again I knew that it was wishful thinking. When the scan was done the tech brings it to the doctor and then the doctor always comes and chats with me about it. The usual conversation is " Well, we still have a big baby with a big head" But to my surprise she said...." I am about to make your day" I was in shock! I said " you mean I get to have her today?" She went on to explain that the sac she is in actually has an inner sac and an outer sac, these sacs are supposes to be fused together, but somehow my inner one separated from the outer and that poses a problem because the cord could get stuck in the hole that was formed by this and essentially cut off everything to the baby, but at this time the baby was perfectly fine, I asked about 20 times...... Being that I was 37 weeks there was no reason to watch it when I could just go have her. I was happy nervous shocked, probably every emotion that you could think of was running through me. I immediately called mom so that she could get her plane situation in order, and the next was the most important. Eric is usually off on Thursdays but he had decided to pick up an extra shift that day, I called him right away and said that we needed to go to the hospital because I was being induced. At first he thought that I was joking, then I briefly told him and just said that he needed to hurry because the doctor said that I needed to go straight there. So he met me at home I grabbed all our stuff and off we went. On the way we called the family explained the situation. What a great birthday present for Grandpa Jeff! When we got to the hospital they admitted us and a nurse came down to take us to our room. I explained to her that my best friends name is Katie and she is a Labor and delivery Nurse. It just so happened that Katie was on that day, ready to leave for the day, but still there. Being the best friend that she is she stayed until 10 p.m and made sure that I had the best nurses taking care of me while she was gone. The induction process definitely takes awhile I was admitted Thursday around 5:00 pm and they had to give me three sets of gel packs to soften my cervix before they could even give me the pitocin. I finally got it around midnight, with an Ambien that made me feel drunk. they gave it to me to help me sleep but my contractions really started up and they were hurting, I felt weird from the Ambien, and I was just anxious. So around 5:00 in the morning I had my epidural. Those are amazing!
